Tea is a support and community app for women to vet potential dating partners through background checks, catfish detection, red flag alerts, and sex offender registries. In late July, the app released a statement confirming that they had suffered a significant data breach.
Around 72,000 images, including approximately 13,000 selfies and government IDs were exposed. The incident also compromised over 1 million private messages containing sensitive and personal information, such as phone numbers, names, and social media handles.
According to 404 Media, who first reported the incident, hackers from the 4chan message board gained unauthorized access through Tea’s legacy storage system via an exposed database hosted on Google’s mobile app development platform. The breach is significant because it endangered women in vulnerable situations.
The hackers posted the women’s photos across 4chan and X (formerly Twitter) for ridicule and harassment. They even created ranking websites and used image metadata to track women’s locations. Particularly for survivors of intimate partner violence, this breach presents real danger.
